In the 1820's the Cross family of Birmingham were registered as Gunmakers. There has been an unbroken line of generation upon generation of this family in the English gun trade until the present day.

In living memory, W.C. Cross (William) was working after the First World War, (1914-1918) In Price St in Birmingham, (a famous street name in the English Gunmakers world) and was joined by his son George, who also at an earlier time worked for William Powell & Son another famous Birmingham name.

Following a decorated and distinguished service during the second world war in charge of one of the "wing" sections, building Avro Lancaster's and Supermarine Spitfires in Birmingham, After the war, George worked for G. Bate Ltd of 132 Steelhouse Lane, as the main gunsmith and shop manager.

George and George's son Conrad purchased G. Bate Gunmakers Ltd in the early 1950's and with Conrad's son Nicholas have taken the firm forward to the present day. In 1976 G. Bate Gunmakers planted another business in the English County town of Stafford. Around the same time a shooting school was established on Lord Lichfield's estate at Shugborough, just outside Stafford.

There are many G. Bate shotguns in circulation. The main specialist aspect of these is the priority given to lightweight design. Many 12bore G. Bate shotguns are built on 20bore actions for example.
